Industrial applications of AISI 316L

Introduction

In AISI 316L the “L” stands for “low carbon” content. The carbon quantity present in AISI 316L stainless steel must be ≤ 0.03. and in AISI 316 it must be ≤ 0.07. AISI 316L is a widely used steel and applications varying from medical devices to military equipments. This is actually the second most common stainless steel after 304/A2 stainless steel.

The Chemical composition is like –

C – 0.03

Mn – 2.0

Si – 1.0

Cr – 16.5-18.5

Ni – 8-13

P – 0.04

Mo – 2-2.25

N – 0.11

Industrial Applications

1 Pipeline

Due to it’s corrosion resistance property it is heavily used in various types of pipelines without having the worry about corrosion. The lower cost of this material is also make it an advantage as we can use it in high quantity in urban pipelines or industrial specific.

2 Can be used in Coastal or high humidity areas

Due to its corrosion resistance property it’s very practical to use it in these type of areas.

3 Marines and Ships

Mechanical Properties similar to that of Grade 316 we can use it in building ships and Marines mobiles.

4 Welding

Low carbon content removes the carbon precipitation in welding and makes it more durable.
